How to Choose a Quality Curtain and Blinds Shop in Malaysia

A quality curtain and blinds shop measures your windows itself, makes the curtains to measure, has its own fitters install them and can show test figures for what it sells. Before you order, see the fabric at full size, ask for its heat, sound and fire figures, check that cords and chains meet the child-safety standard, and get the fabric, track, operation and warranty written into the quotation.

Key takeaways

  • A "curtain shop near me" search ranks shops by relevance, distance and prominence (including reviews), not by the quality of their work.
  • Let the shop measure: Silent Gliss says the brackets and fixing points depend on the wall or ceiling, the system's weight, the fabric and any obstacles.
  • Ask for figures, not adjectives: Ts and Rs for heat, the αw rating for sound, and a named fire standard such as BS 5867 or NFPA 701.
  • Corded and chain blinds should meet the child-safety standard EN 13120.
  • The Consumer Protection Act 1999 says goods sold to you must be of acceptable quality, and services such as installation must be carried out with reasonable care and skill.

What makes a curtain and blinds shop a quality one?

A quality shop makes the curtain for your window, not for a shelf, and stays responsible for the job from the first visit to the last bracket. Four things show it: the shop measures on site, it makes the fabric to that measurement, its own fitters install the track or blind, and it answers for the work afterwards.

Fitting matters as much as fabric. Silent Gliss writes in its technical catalogue that its systems are for installation by qualified fitter only, and that the number of brackets and fixing points varies with the fitting surface, the system's weight, the fabric make-up, the screws and any obstacles (Silent Gliss dim-out blind catalogue). A shop that measures and installs plans those fixings for your wall or ceiling; one that only sells fabric leaves that to you.

For motorised curtains and blinds, the same catalogue says electrical installations must follow Silent Gliss wiring diagrams and conform to local regulations. Ask who does the wiring; our guide to motorised curtains in Malaysia covers mains and battery motors.

Is the nearest "curtain shop near me" the right one?

Not necessarily: a "near me" search sorts shops by how well they match your words, how close they are and how well known they are, not by the quality of their work. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence draws on things such as how many websites link to a business and how many reviews it has (Google Business Profile Help). Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Use the map for a shortlist, then judge each shop on the checks below: for made-to-measure work, who measures and fits matters more than distance.

What should you see and test in a showroom?

See the fabric at full size against daylight, feel its weight and, for motorised curtains, hear the motor run. A small swatch looks different from a curtain across a sunlit window, so ask to see a large piece against the light.

Noise is worth checking in person, because a curtain motor runs every time the curtain opens or closes. There is also an outside check: Quiet Mark lists the Silent Gliss SG 5100 and SG 5600 electric curtain tracks as certified models (Quiet Mark). Ask whether the motor you are quoted has any such certification.

Which questions show that a shop knows its products?

Ask for figures: a shop that knows its range can give you each fabric's tested values and each track's limits. These are the questions worth asking, and what a good answer contains.

Ask the shopA good answer includesWhy it matters
Will you measure the window yourselves?A site visit before the final quotation, and the shop's own fitters for the installationFixings depend on the surface, the weight and the fabric
How much heat does this fabric keep out?Its solar transmission (Ts) and solar reflectance (Rs) valuesA low Ts and a high Rs reduce overheating (heat, light and glare)
Does this curtain absorb sound? Its αw value, measured to DIN EN ISO 354αw runs from 0 (no sound absorption) to 1 (complete sound absorption) (acoustics)
Is the fabric fire rated? The standard it is certified to, such as BS 5867 Part 2 or NFPA 701A named standard can be checked; "fire resistant" on its own cannot (flame retardancy)
How heavy and how wide can this track go?Its maximum length and weight, two separate limits: the Silent Gliss SG 5600 runs up to 25 m and carries up to 65 kg, but 40 kg on a 25 m runThe limit decides which track a long or heavy curtain needs (electric curtain tracks)
Are the cords and chains child safe?Compliance with EN 13120 and a fixed chain retainerSilent Gliss fixes its chain retainer at least 150 cm above the floor
What does the warranty cover?Written terms for the fabric, the track or motor and the workmanship, and who handles after-sales careYou know who to call, and for what, before anything goes wrong

How do you check that blinds are safe for children?

Ask whether the cords and chains meet EN 13120, and where the chain retainer will be fixed. Silent Gliss writes that all relevant Silent Gliss systems correspond to the child-safety standard EN 13120, and its chain-operated blinds use a safety retainer fixed at least 150 cm above the floor (Silent Gliss catalogue).

A good shop raises this before you do and fixes the retainer when it installs the blind. For a child's bedroom, a motorised blind or curtain has no chain to pull at all; our guide to blackout curtains and blinds for a bedroom compares the safest options.

What does Malaysian consumer law give you if something goes wrong?

The Consumer Protection Act 1999 protects you whichever shop you choose: the goods must be of acceptable quality, and the work must be done with reasonable care and skill. Under section 32, goods of acceptable quality are fit for their usual purposes, acceptable in appearance and finish, free from minor defects, safe and durable. Section 53 covers services such as measuring and installation: they must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and the materials supplied with them must be fit for purpose. Where the contract sets no completion date, section 55 says the work must be completed within a reasonable time (Consumer Protection Act 1999, Act 599).

One clause fits curtains and blinds closely. Where a consumer has the right to reject goods that cannot be returned without significant cost because of their size, height or method of attachment, section 45 says the supplier must collect them at its own expense.

These rights are easier to use with paperwork. Ask for a quotation that names the fabric, the track or blind system, how it opens (hand, cord, chain or motor) and the warranty terms.

This is a plain summary of the Act, not legal advice. The sections themselves are in the official reprint on the KPDN website.

What do reviews tell you about a shop's after-sales care?

Read reviews for what happened after the curtains went up, not only for how they looked on the day. The useful ones mention the fitting and the follow-up.

… they also helped to touch-up after a week under their warranty program.

That detail tells you more than a star rating. Google counts reviews towards prominence, so a shop with few reviews can rank lower on the map without its work being any worse; ask each shop how it handles a problem after installation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a good curtain shop near me?

Use Google Maps to make a shortlist, then compare the shops on how they work, not on their place in the list. Google ranks local results mainly by relevance, distance and prominence, and says no business can pay for a better local ranking. Ask each shop to measure on site and to show the fabric and track figures for what it quotes.

Should the curtain shop measure my windows, or can I do it myself?

Let the shop measure. Made-to-measure curtains and blinds are cut to the window, and Silent Gliss says the brackets and fixing points depend on the wall or ceiling, the system's weight, the fabric and any obstacles, so the people who install should take the measurements. Promolink offers free site measurement.

What fabric figures should I ask a curtain shop for?

For heat, the solar transmission (Ts) and solar reflectance (Rs) values: a low Ts and a high Rs reduce overheating. For sound, the alpha-w rating measured to DIN EN ISO 354, from 0 (no absorption) to 1 (complete absorption). For fire, the standard the fabric is certified to, such as BS 5867 Part 2 or NFPA 701.

What are my rights if new curtains or blinds turn out faulty?

Under the Consumer Protection Act 1999, goods sold to a consumer must be of acceptable quality: fit for their usual purposes, acceptable in finish, free from minor defects, safe and durable. Services such as installation must be carried out with reasonable care and skill. If goods you may reject cannot be returned without significant cost because of their size or how they are attached, the supplier must collect them at its own expense.

Where is the Promolink showroom, and when is it open?

Promolink's showroom is at B-25-08, Residensi MH Platinum 2, Jalan Usahawan 6, Setapak Jaya, 53200 Kuala Lumpur, and its office is at A-13A-01, PJ MidTown, Petaling Jaya. Promolink's hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 7pm; it is closed on Saturday and Sunday.
