Venetian Blinds in Malaysia: Which Slat, and Manual or Motorised?

Venetian blinds suit Malaysian homes and home offices because you can tilt the slats to cut glare and keep privacy without shutting out the daylight. Choose aluminium for a slim, minimalist look and the largest sizes, wood or leather for warmth, and a wand, chain, cord or motor to work them. A motorised Venetian blind makes most sense on tall, wide or hard-to-reach windows.

Key takeaways

  • Each system caps width, height and area, so width and height cannot both be at their maximum: a 50 mm aluminium blind goes up to 3.6 m wide, 3.6 m high and 10 m², wood or leather up to 2.4 m, 2.75 m and 4.6 m².
  • Slats are 16 mm or 25 mm on the wand, chain and SG 8250 systems, and 50 mm on the SG 8910 cord and SG 8960 electric systems.
  • Where young children sleep or play, choose a motorised blind worked from a switch or remote: the US Consumer Product Safety Commission counted 209 strangulations and near-misses on window covering cords among children aged 8 and under from 2009 to 2021.
  • A motorised Venetian blind (SG 8250 or SG 8960) is raised, lowered and tilted from a switch, a remote or an app.

Why choose a Venetian blind for a Malaysian home?

Choose a Venetian blind when you want to adjust the light through the day, not just open or close the window. Its slats tilt as well as rise and fall, so you can angle them to keep the sun off a screen or a sofa while daylight still comes in.

Promolink's Venetian blind systems page puts it this way: minor adjustments throughout the day enable you to have just the right light and visibility.

Aluminium, wood or leather: which slat should you choose?

Pick the slat for the look you want and the size of the window: aluminium goes the largest, while wood and leather add warmth or luxury on smaller windows. Promolink's Venetian page sums up the three: Aluminium slats suit minimalist interior spaces; wood creates a warm feel, and leather conveys the ultimate sense of luxury.

Wood and leather come on the two 50 mm systems, the SG 8910 (cord) and SG 8960 (electric), with a selection of 50 mm aluminium slats too (Silent Gliss Venetian specifier). On both, aluminium goes 1.2 m wider than wood or leather (SG 8960 catalogue), within each area limit.

Aluminium3.6 m3.6 m10 m²Suits minimalist interiors
Wood2.4 m2.75 m4.6 m²Creates a warm feel
Leather2.4 m2.75 m4.6 m²Conveys a sense of luxury

Leather slats cannot be fitted with decorative slat tapes. For real wood, think about the room first: MetMalaysia describes the climate as one of uniform temperature, high humidity and copious rainfall (MetMalaysia), so read Promolink's guide to timber blinds in humid weather before you choose wood for a bathroom or wet kitchen.

16 mm, 25 mm or 50 mm: which slat width suits your window?

Pick 16 mm or 25 mm slats for a slim blind with a small stack when it is raised, and 50 mm slats if you want wood or leather. The wand (SG 8110), chain (SG 8300) and electric SG 8250 take 25 mm slats as standard or 16 mm; the cord SG 8910 and electric SG 8960 take 50 mm.

A raised blind still covers the top of the window, because the slats stack under the headrail; the Silent Gliss catalogues give each stack:

BlindHeight of the blindStack when fully raised
SG 8110, 25 mm privacy-control slats150 cm11 cm
SG 8110, 25 mm privacy-control slats300 cm17 cm
SG 8960, 50 mm wood150 cm20 cm
SG 8960, 50 mm wood275 cm30 cm
SG 8960, 50 mm leather150 cm22 cm

Decorative tapes make the stack larger. Working at a screen? Promolink's wand-operated Venetian page says its privacy feature ensures no direct light penetration when the slats are closed; it is for 25 mm slats only and not with side guides (SG 8110 catalogue).

Wand, chain, cord or motor: how should you operate a Venetian blind?

Use a wand or chain for an everyday window within reach, a cord for a 50 mm blind, and a motor for tall, wide or hard-to-reach windows. Each Silent Gliss catalogue caps width, height and area; the blind must stay within all three.

SG 8910 cordOne cord raises, lowers and tilts; one small pull lowers it steadily50 mmAluminium 3.6 m / 3.6 m / 10 m²; wood or leather 2.4 m / 2.75 m / 4.6 m²

Sloping glass: the wand system takes optional side-guide wires for windows that lean up to 15 degrees from vertical (SG 8110 catalogue).

When is a Venetian blind motorised worth it?

A motorised Venetian blind is worth it when the window is tall, wide or out of reach, or when you change the slats several times a day. Promolink offers two: the SG 8250 for 25 mm or 16 mm slats and the SG 8960 for 50 mm wood, aluminium or leather.

The SG 8960 comes with a 5-position switch that raises, lowers and tilts the slats; an optional motor with a built-in receiver adds hand-held and wall transmitters and the Silent Gliss Move app (SG 8960 catalogue). The SG 8250 runs from a fixed switch, a third-party home control system or Silent Gliss radio control (SG 8250 catalogue). Silent Gliss says Move can set products to operate at designated times (Move leaflet). The same thinking applies to motorised curtains on tall, double-volume windows.

Are corded Venetian blinds safe with young children?

Only with care: where young children sleep or play, choose a motorised blind worked from a switch or remote, and on a corded blind fit the EN 13120 parts Silent Gliss names, with the cleat or retainer at least 150 cm above the floor. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission found that custom window coverings with accessible operating cords longer than 8 inches pose an unreasonable risk of strangulation to children aged 8 and under.

The CPSC counted 209 reported fatal and near-miss strangulations on window covering cords among those children from January 2009 to December 2021, 100 of them (48 percent) fatal, and judged cord cleats inadequate: a child can reach one by climbing onto a couch or chair (US CPSC, Federal Register, 2022).

"strangulation deaths among children occur quickly and silently, such that parental supervision is insufficient to address the incidents"

US Consumer Product Safety Commission, 2022

Silent Gliss says all its systems are tested and meet EN 13120 (Silent Gliss child safety), and each Venetian catalogue names the part it needs:

  • SG 8110 wand: cord cleats SG 10742, at least 150 cm above the floor, and the break-away cord connector SG 10748.
  • SG 8300 chain: chain retainer SG 10400 or child safety device SG 10482 (SG 8300 catalogue).
  • SG 8910 cord: Cord Retainer 10400 for EN 13120 (SG 8910 catalogue). The chain and cord catalogues also show Safety Retainer SG 10731 at least 150 cm above the floor; ask Promolink which is supplied.

Ask for these parts on the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Are Venetian blinds a good choice for a Malaysian home?

Yes, for rooms where you want to adjust the light through the day. The slats tilt, so you can cut glare and keep privacy while daylight still comes in. Choose aluminium for a minimalist look and the largest sizes, or wood or leather for warmth. For real wood in a bathroom or wet kitchen, read Promolink's guide to timber blinds in humid weather first.

Can Venetian blinds be motorised?

Yes. Promolink offers two motorised Silent Gliss Venetian systems: the SG 8250 for 25 mm or 16 mm slats, up to 3 m wide or 3.4 m high within a 5 m² area, and the SG 8960 for 50 mm wood, aluminium or leather slats. They are raised, lowered and tilted from a switch, a remote, a home control system or the Silent Gliss Move app.

How big can a Venetian blind be?

Width and height cannot both be at their maximum, because each system also caps the area. A 50 mm aluminium blind (SG 8910 or SG 8960) goes up to 3.6 m wide, 3.6 m high and 10 m²; wood or leather up to 2.4 m, 2.75 m and 4.6 m². The 25 mm wand and chain systems go up to 3 m wide and 3 m high, within 7 m² and 4.5 m².

Do Venetian blinds block all the light when closed?

For the least light, ask for privacy control: Silent Gliss offers it on the SG 8110 wand system to avoid direct light ingress when the slats are closed (25 mm slats only). The SG 8250 headrail also has a flange to minimise light coming in at the top of the blind.

Are corded Venetian blinds child safe?

Only with care. Where young children sleep or play, choose a motorised blind worked from a switch or remote. On a corded blind, fit the EN 13120 parts Silent Gliss names for its wand, chain and cord Venetian systems, with the cleat or retainer at least 150 cm above the floor, though the US Consumer Product Safety Commission judged cord cleats inadequate, because a child can climb onto a couch or chair to reach one.
