How Should You Control Motorised Ripplefold and Wave Curtains?

On Silent Gliss tracks, the track decides how a motorised Ripplefold, Wave or S Fold curtain is controlled: the smaller SG 5100 comes with a wireless wall switch, with a remote, a timer or both as options, and the larger SG 5600 is the one for the Move app, Matter and KNX or building management. Choose before the ceiling and pelmet are closed, because every motor needs power and some controls need more.

Key takeaways
- Silent Gliss's smaller SG 5100 track comes in four control versions: Base (a wireless wall switch), Remote, Timer and Total Control (all three).
- The Move app, Matter and KNX or building management are for the larger SG 5600 (runs up to 25 m, and curtains up to 65 kg on a straight 10 m run).
- Both tracks have a manual override for a power failure (listed for SG 5600 tracks up to 12 m); TNB customers averaged 47.88 minutes without power in 2024.
- A new power point is electrical work, which Malaysia's Electricity Regulations 1994 reserve for a registered Electrical Contractor.
Which controls can a motorised Ripplefold, Wave or S Fold curtain use?
Both Silent Gliss tracks for motorised Ripplefold and Wave curtains take a wireless wall switch, a remote and Touch and Go, where a slight pull on the curtain starts the motor; the SG 5100 adds timer units, the SG 5600 the Move app, Matter and building systems. Silent Gliss's NBS Source listing describes Touch and Go, and on the SG 5600 the catalogue lists it for tracks up to 12 m.
Promolink's Wave curtain page says Silent Gliss Wave is also known as S Fold or Ripple Fold, and its electric curtain track page lists the SG 5100 (the smaller motor: runs up to 9 m, curtains up to 30 kg) and the SG 5600 (runs up to 25 m, curtains up to 65 kg), each length and weight a separate limit. Silent Gliss's Electric Curtain Track Systems catalogue and its Motors and Controls catalogue show what each takes:
| Control | Silent Gliss track | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless wall switch | SG 5100 (all versions); SG 5600 with a radio module | No switch cable; a plug-in radio module (SG 5600) |
| Fixed (wired) wall switch | SG 5100 with the mains-controlled motor SG 5193; SG 5600 (mains or dry contact switching) | A switch cable to the motor |
| Handheld remote | SG 5100 Remote and Total Control; SG 5600 with a radio module | A plug-in radio module (SG 5600) |
| Timer | SG 5100 Timer and Total Control; SG 5600 through the Move app | Move server SG 11900, plug-in module SG 11939 (SG 5600) |
| Move app | SG 5600 | Move server SG 11900, plug-in module SG 11939 |
| Matter smart home | SG 5600 | Plug-in module SG 11939 |
| KNX or building management | SG 5600 | Smart module SG 11270, a Smart gateway, DIN-rail space |
To choose: the SG 5100 Remote for a switch and remote on a run up to 9 m with a curtain up to 30 kg (28 kg on a full 9 m run), Timer or Total Control for set times too, and the SG 5600 for the app, Matter, a building system or a bigger curtain. Ceiling already closed? Our guide to motorised curtains in Malaysia compares mains and battery motors; wave versus pinch pleat curtains covers stacking.
What does each control need in the room before the ceiling is closed?
Every Silent Gliss SG 5100 or SG 5600 motor needs power, and some controls need more: a cable route for a wired switch, a back box for a recessed metal switch, access to the ceiling for a recessed motor, or space for a gateway.
The SG 5100's standard motor SG 5190 runs on 100-240 V AC (24 V DC and mains-controlled motors are options); the SG 5600 on 100-250 V AC or 24 V DC (a 24 V DC power supply is not supplied).
"Electrical installations must be carried out according to Silent Gliss wiring diagrams and conform to local regulations."
Silent Gliss, Electric Curtain Track Systems catalogue
In Malaysia, the Electricity Regulations 1994 (in the 1994 text notified to the WTO) reserve electrical work for holders of a valid Certificate of Registration as an Electrical Contractor (regulation 75), and single-phase wiring is supervised by a wireman, who certifies it on completion (regulation 12). Electrical contractors are registered with the Energy Commission, Suruhanjaya Tenaga.
- Choose the track first. Only the SG 5600 takes the Move app, Matter or Silent Gliss's Smart link to KNX and building systems.
- Plan power for the motor. Silent Gliss tells fitters to
Check space for cables and plugs!
- Decide the wall switch. A wired one needs a cable route to the motor; an SG Control R switch in steel or brass (SG 5600) needs an existing recessed back box at least 16 mm deep.
- Keep a way into the ceiling. For an SG 5600 motor recessed in a suspended ceiling, Silent Gliss says ceiling access is necessary for assembly and programming.
- Book a registered electrical contractor for the power point and any wired switch, before the ceiling is closed.
Can one switch or remote run several Ripplefold curtains?
Yes: Silent Gliss multi-channel handsets and wall switches run several motorised Ripplefold curtains one by one, in groups or all together, and on the SG 5600 the Move server runs up to 40 systems individually. For the SG 5100, the SG 10948 handset has 6+1 channels: six run up to 6 curtains or groups, and the extra one runs all systems together. The 5+1 channel wall switch SG 10951 does the same for 5.
On the SG 5600's SG Control N radio system, a 6-channel handset runs up to 6 groups of up to 5 systems each, and several channels can be operated at once (Silent Gliss Motors and Controls catalogue). A channel can run one curtain or a group, so a motorised sheer and its blackout curtain can share a channel, or have one each to move separately.
How do timers and the Move app handle the afternoon sun?
A timer closes motorised Wave curtains at set times, so a sun-facing room can be shaded before anyone gets home: on the SG 5100 with a Silent Gliss timer unit, and on the SG 5600 with the Move app's daily and weekly schedules, which can follow sunrise and sunset.
- Simple timer (SG 5100). The radio timer unit SG 11429 has a single open time and a single close time.
- Multi-channel timer (SG 5100). The SG 11093 runs up to 16 systems, with up to 8 timing points for daily and weekly cycles.
- Move server and app (SG 5600). Day and week programmes, sunrise and sunset times, a holiday mode and customised automation; the app listing adds groups and moods.
For a west-facing room, set the close time before the afternoon sun reaches the glass (see keeping a hot room cool).
Can motorised Wave curtains join a smart home or building management system?
Yes, on the Silent Gliss SG 5600 track: with the plug-in module SG 11939 its SG 9060 motor is Matter enabled, and with the Smart module SG 11270 plus a Smart gateway, such as the KNX gateway SG 11261, it links to KNX and most major building management systems. The SG 5100's own remotes, switches and timers work by 433.92 MHz radio.
Matter is the Connectivity Standards Alliance's smart home standard, which the Alliance says helps manufacturers build devices compatible with smart home and voice services such as Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, Google's Assistant, and others
. Silent Gliss says only that the motor is Matter enabled, so before planning on voice control, check that your hub supports Matter.
KNX is an open standard for home and building control (KNX Association); Silent Gliss's KNX gateway SG 11261 is DIN-rail mounted and controls up to 8 motors, or 64 with expansion units.
What happens to motorised Ripplefold curtains in a power cut?
A motorised Ripplefold curtain on a Silent Gliss track has a manual override in the event of power failure: the SG 5100 has one, and for the SG 5600 Silent Gliss lists it on tracks up to 12 m. Silent Gliss also lists permanent memory for the SG 5600's limit (end) positions. The catalogue does not say whether a timer or app schedule needs setting again after a cut, so ask.
Silent Gliss lists the SG 5600's Touch and Go with permanent power only. For an SG 5600 run over 12 m, ask how the curtain opens in a power cut.
By TNB's 2024 figures, the average customer had 0.96 interruptions (SAIFI) and 47.88 minutes without power in the year (SAIDI), against 20.28 minutes in Kuala Lumpur and 45.10 minutes across 15 urban cities including Petaling Jaya. The override is a back-up, not an everyday need.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the app to use motorised Ripplefold curtains?
No. Silent Gliss's SG 5100 Wave track comes in four control versions, Base, Remote, Timer and Total Control, and every one includes a wireless wall switch. The Move app is optional: on the SG 5600 track it needs the Move server SG 11900 and the plug-in module SG 11939, and the SG 5600 can also run from a fixed wall switch.
Where should the power point for a motorised Wave curtain go?
Ask the electrician for a power point where the motor will sit; Silent Gliss's catalogue tells fitters to check space for cables and plugs. If the motor will be recessed into a suspended ceiling, plan a way into the ceiling space as well, because Silent Gliss says that access is necessary for assembly and programming.
Who can add the power point for motorised curtains in Malaysia?
A registered electrical contractor. Malaysia's Electricity Regulations 1994 say no person may carry out electrical work without a valid Certificate of Registration as an Electrical Contractor, and single-phase wiring is supervised by a wireman who certifies it on completion. Electrical contractors are registered with the Energy Commission, Suruhanjaya Tenaga. Silent Gliss also requires its own wiring diagrams to be followed.
Can motorised Wave curtains open and close by themselves every day?
Yes, on a timer. On the SG 5100, Silent Gliss's SG 11429 timer unit sets one open time and one close time, and the multi-channel SG 11093 has up to 8 timing points for daily and weekly cycles. On the SG 5600, a timer means the Move server SG 11900 and the module SG 11939, with day and week programmes that can follow sunrise and sunset, plus a holiday mode.
What happens to a Silent Gliss motorised curtain in a power cut?
Both the SG 5600 and the smaller SG 5100 have a manual override in the event of power failure; for the SG 5600, Silent Gliss lists it on tracks up to 12 m. Silent Gliss also lists permanent memory for the SG 5600's limit (end) positions. The catalogue does not say whether a timer or app schedule needs setting again after a cut, so ask when you order.
