Sheer by Day, Blackout by Night: Two Ripplefold Curtain Layers

Two Ripplefold curtains share one window on a double track: a sheer that softens daylight and a blackout that closes over it at night. Silent Gliss gives about 245 to 325 mm of fitting space for two Wave curtains, which Promolink's Wave Curtain page notes are also known as Ripple Fold. The usual order puts the sheer by the glass and the blackout on the room side, and both layers can be motorised.

Key takeaways

  • The usual arrangement is the sheer on the track nearest the glass and the blackout on the room-side track.
  • Silent Gliss gives about 245 to 325 mm of fitting space for two Wave (Ripplefold) curtains, and 225 to 305 mm for a Wave curtain with a pleated one, including a 5 mm gap between the layers.
  • Silent Gliss's Wave brochure gives the 60 mm glider cord for short curtains and lightweight fabrics and the 80 mm cord for long drops and heavier fabrics; its workroom guide recommends 80 mm for most installations.
  • For the SG 5100, a Silent Gliss 2+1-channel handset runs two motorised tracks one at a time, or both together.

Can you hang a sheer and a blackout Ripplefold curtain on one window?

Yes: in a Malaysian condo or landed home, a sheer Ripplefold curtain and a blackout Ripplefold curtain can share one window when each runs on its own track, side by side on the ceiling or the wall. Each layer then opens and closes on its own: the sheer stays closed across the glass through the day for privacy and softer light, and the blackout closes over it in the evening.

Promolink's Wave Curtain page notes that Silent Gliss Wave is also known as S Fold or Ripple Fold.

"When two curtains are required, (perhaps a sheer for daytime light diffusion, and a blackout for the evenings), consider the space available to accommodate two systems."

Silent Gliss, Curtain Planning Guide, November 2025

Promolink sells the same idea as a blind: its Roman blinds come as a two-layer system, a sheer layer for day and a Roman blind for night.

Which goes in front on a double track: the sheer or the blackout?

For everyday use, the usual arrangement is the sheer on the track nearest the glass and the blackout on the room-side track. By day the sheer stays closed and the blackout sits stacked at the sides; at night the blackout draws across in front of it. Put the sheer in front only when it is the look you want from the room.

Silent Gliss's planning guide puts a Wave stack at around 23% of the curtain width, against around 33% for pleated curtains; our guide to wave curtains and pinch pleat compares the two headings.

How much space does a double track need for Ripplefold curtains?

Plan for about 245 to 325 mm (roughly 25 to 33 cm) of fitting space for two Wave or Ripplefold curtains. Silent Gliss's figure includes a 5 mm gap between the layers. A single Wave curtain needs 140 to 220 mm, depending on the hook spacing (Silent Gliss Curtain Planning Guide).

Curtains on one windowApproximate space Silent Gliss allows
Two Wave (Ripplefold) curtains245 to 325 mm
One Wave curtain with one pleated curtain225 to 305 mm
Two pleated curtains205 to 255 mm
One Wave curtain on its own140 to 220 mm

Two Wave layers therefore need about 4 to 7 cm more depth than two pleated ones. Silent Gliss's Wave workroom guide gives the stack depth of one Wave curtain as 100 or 120 mm with the 60 mm glider cord and 140 or 160 mm with the 80 mm cord, by hook spacing.

In a curtain box, a recess built into the plaster ceiling, measure the inside depth first. If the box in your condo or home is still to be built, give your contractor or designer the 245 to 325 mm figure before the ceiling is closed.

What if the curtain box is too shallow for two Wave curtains?

Where space is limited, Silent Gliss's planning guide suggests combining heading styles: a Wave curtain with a pleated one takes about 225 to 305 mm. That is only about 20 mm less than two Wave curtains. Its smallest figure for two curtains is 205 to 255 mm, for two pleated ones.

On a wall, the planning guide says Double tracks are possible, but your curtain heading choice may be limited due to the extension required. Whichever pair you choose, Silent Gliss says a Wave curtain's dedicated glider cord must be specified when ordering, so plan both tracks together. Where even two pleated curtains will not fit, our guide to blackout curtains and blinds for a bedroom compares other ways to darken a room.

Which fabric suits the sheer layer and which the blackout layer?

Use a light voile for the sheer and a blackout or dim-out fabric, or a curtain with a blackout lining, for the night layer. Silent Gliss's workroom guide lists voiles and blackout lining among the fabrics that normally suit Wave, and its Wave brochure matches the glider cord to the fabric and the drop.

Which sheer suits the day layer?

The Wave brochure says the 60 mm cord creates a shallower wave and lends itself to short curtains and lightweight fabrics, while the workroom guide says For the majority of installations Silent Gliss would recommend the 80mm glider cord. For a full-height sheer, weigh the two: the 60 mm cord gives a shallower wave and takes less depth. The brochure says Colorama 1 and 2 fabrics are proven to give an exceptional Wave effect throughout the full drop of the curtain, and that not all fabrics suit Wave. Ask for each sheer's light transmittance (Tv), a figure Promolink's heat, light and glare page uses for Silent Gliss screen fabrics.

Which fabric suits the night layer?

Silent Gliss's made-to-measure curtains brochure says heavier opaque fabrics provide room darkening and a cosy ambiance. Silent Gliss's Wave brochure says the 80 mm cord gives larger, more defined waves and is perfect for long curtain drops and heavier fabrics. For afternoon sun, Promolink's heat, light and glare page recommends a low solar transmission (Ts) and a high solar reflectance (Rs); our guide explains how to keep a hot room cool.

Can both layers of day and night Wave curtains be motorised?

Yes: each layer runs on its own motorised track, and one handset can open the sheer and the blackout separately or together. Promolink's electric curtain track page lists two Silent Gliss electric tracks that take Wave: the SG 5100, for runs up to 9 m and curtains up to 30 kg, and the SG 5600, for runs up to 25 m and curtains up to 65 kg: two separate limits (a 25 m SG 5600 run carries up to 40 kg).

Silent Gliss's motors and controls catalogue gives these options:

  1. One handset for both layers. For the SG 5100, two channels of the 2+1-channel handset each operate one track individually, and the third operates all of them together. For the SG 5600, a 6-channel handset can operate several channels at once.
  2. A timer. For the SG 5100, a 1-channel radio timer has one open time and one close time, and a 16-channel timer takes up to 8 timing points for daily and weekly cycles. Promolink's own line, on its motorised system page, is Push the button or set the timer.
  3. An app for the larger track. For the SG 5600, the Silent Gliss Move server, run from an app, operates up to 40 single systems individually and is programmable by day and week, and to sunrise and sunset times.

Silent Gliss's electric track catalogue lists a manual override on the SG 5100 for a power failure; our guide to motorised curtains in Malaysia covers the motors.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should a curtain box be for two Ripplefold curtains?

Allow about 245 to 325 mm of fitting space for two Wave (Ripplefold) curtains: that is the Silent Gliss figure, and it includes a 5 mm gap between them. Where space is limited, Silent Gliss suggests combining heading styles: a Wave curtain with a pleated one takes 225 to 305 mm, about 20 mm less. Have the depth measured before you order.

Can one remote control both motorised curtain layers?

Yes. For the Silent Gliss SG 5100 electric track, a 2+1-channel handset operates up to two tracks individually, and its extra channel operates them all together, so one remote can open the sheer, the blackout or both. For the larger SG 5600, the Silent Gliss Move server, run from an app, operates up to 40 single systems individually and can be programmed by day and week, and to sunrise and sunset times.

Which Ripplefold curtain goes nearest the window on a double track?

Usually the sheer. The usual arrangement is the sheer on the track nearest the glass and the blackout on the room-side track, so the sheer stays closed by day and the blackout draws across it at night. Hang the sheer on the room side only when it is the look you want from the room. Either way, each layer needs its own track.

Can I add a sheer track to my existing Ripplefold curtain?

First check the depth. Silent Gliss allows about 245 to 325 mm for two Wave curtains and 225 to 305 mm for a Wave curtain with a pleated one. If the new sheer is Wave, it needs a dedicated glider cord inside its own track, which Silent Gliss says must be specified when ordering. The free measurement is the time to check the box and the existing track.

Which fabric suits a sheer Ripplefold (S Fold) curtain?

A light voile. The Silent Gliss Wave workroom guide lists voiles among the fabrics that normally suit Wave, and its brochure says its Colorama 1 and 2 fabrics are proven to give an exceptional Wave effect throughout the full drop of the curtain. The brochure gives the 60 mm glider cord for short curtains and lightweight fabrics; the workroom guide recommends the 80 mm cord for most installations.
