Are Timber Blinds Suitable for Malaysia's Humid Weather?

Yes, real timber blinds suit Malaysia's humid weather in air-conditioned rooms such as bedrooms, living rooms and studies, but not in bathrooms, wet kitchens or on open balconies. Wood takes up moisture from humid air and swells, which can warp the slats, so the room matters. In wet rooms, ask for pleated blinds in a moisture-resistant material; outside, use treated outdoor wooden blinds.

Key takeaways

  • Wood takes up moisture from the air around it, and the swelling and shrinking that follows can warp, check or split it, says the USDA Wood Handbook.
  • At 26.7 °C, wood in air at 90% relative humidity holds more than twice the moisture it holds at 50%: 20.2% against 9.1%.
  • Put timber blinds in drier rooms: to keep mould away, the US EPA advises indoor humidity below 60 percent, and air conditioning helps.
  • For bathrooms and wet kitchens, Promolink offers pleated blinds in moisture-resistant materials; a balcony needs outdoor wooden blinds, not indoor timber.
  • Silent Gliss says all its systems meet EN 13120 (child safety), and its electric SG 8960 takes wood slats.

Why does humidity affect real timber blinds?

Real wood soaks up moisture from humid air and swells, then shrinks again as the air dries, and that movement is what bends a slat. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook calls wood hygroscopic: it takes on moisture from its surroundings, depending on the air's relative humidity and temperature, and it is plain about what follows:

"This shrinking and swelling can result in warping, checking, and splitting of the wood"

USDA Forest Products Laboratory, Wood Handbook, chapter 4

Malaysia sits at the wet end of that scale. MetMalaysia describes the country's climate as one of uniform temperature, high humidity and copious rainfall, with the maximum daily average relative humidity over 94% (MetMalaysia). The Wood Handbook's own table shows what that means for a wooden slat at a warm room temperature:

How much moisture wood settles at, at 26.7 °C (80 °F)
Relative humidity of the airMoisture content the wood settles at
50%9.1%
60%10.8%
70%12.9%
80%15.7%
90%20.2%

So a slat in damp air at 90% holds more than twice the water of the same slat in drier air at 50%. Wood also does not swell evenly: the handbook notes that tangential shrinkage, along the growth rings, is about twice as great as radial, which is why pieces distort in shape rather than just changing size. It says dimensional stability matters when a wood product faces large moisture swings in service. For a blind, that means the drier and steadier the room's air, the less the slats have to move.

Which rooms in a Malaysian home suit timber blinds?

Timber blinds suit the drier rooms: an air-conditioned bedroom, the living and dining room, and a study or home office. They are a poor match for rooms with steam, splashes or rain, where the moisture in the air rises and falls hardest.

In the rooms that suit them, timber blinds do two jobs. Promolink describes its timber blinds as a classic choice for adding privacy and keeping sunlight at bay for your home or office, and says their thick wooden slats act as effective insulation from the outside heat all year round. For a sun-facing room, read our guide on how to keep a hot room cool with curtains and blinds. For a bedroom that must be dark, our guide to blackout curtains or blinds for a bedroom compares the options.

Can you put timber blinds in a bathroom or kitchen?

It is best not to: steam and condensation keep the slats damp, and damp wood is what warps. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says condensation on windows can be a sign of high humidity, and a bathroom after a shower is the clearest case.

For a bathroom or wet kitchen, Promolink offers pleated blinds in moisture-resistant materials, and they fit unusual window shapes too. If you want the slatted look there, ask Promolink whether an aluminium-slat Venetian blind system suits the room.

What should you use on a balcony instead?

Use blinds made for the outdoors: indoor timber blinds are not built to take rain. Promolink's outdoor wooden blinds are made in wood and bamboo for balconies, patios and gazebos, to keep the sun and rain out. Promolink says they come with teak oil protection, are made of certified non-toxic material, resist weather and fungus, and last up to 10 years.

How do you stop timber blinds warping or growing mould?

Keep the room's humidity in check and keep water off the slats. The EPA says no mould will grow without water or moisture, and its guide to mould at home gives most of these steps (EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home):

  1. Aim for indoor humidity below 60 percent. That is the EPA's line for mould, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. For the wood, the Wood Handbook's table shows that at 60%, wood at 26.7 °C settles near 10.8% moisture, against 20.2% at 90%.
  2. Run the air conditioner or a dehumidifier when needed. The EPA lists both as ways to keep indoor humidity low.
  3. Clear steam at its source. Run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering, and use an exhaust fan or open windows when cooking.
  4. Dry condensation quickly. The EPA advises drying the wet surface fast. Wipe the glass and the sill.
  5. Keep rain off the slats. Close the window before a storm rather than relying on the blind.

Are wooden Venetian blinds safe in a home with young children?

Silent Gliss says all its systems are tested and meet EN 13120 (child safety), and it offers wood slats on both its manual SG 8910 and electric SG 8960 Venetians. Silent Gliss explains that a Venetian blind is raised by a lift tape or cord running through the slats, and worked by an operating cord, the cord which is pulled to operate the blind. Its Venetian specifier lists that operating cord for the manual SG 8910 but not for the electric SG 8960, which lifts on a tape.

Promolink's Venetian page lists electric (SG 8250, SG 8960), chain (SG 8300), cord (SG 8910) and wand (SG 8110) versions; read the Silent Gliss child-safety page and ask at the measuring visit which suits your home. Our guide to motorised curtains in Malaysia explains how motorised systems work.

Where can you get timber blinds made to measure in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor?

Promolink Actions makes timber blinds to measure, from an office in PJ MidTown, Petaling Jaya, and a showroom in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. Promolink has made curtains and blinds since 1998, with its curtains sewn by in-house specialists, and describes itself as the sole gateway to Silent Gliss in Malaysia.

Its timber blinds page puts it simply: Dress up your windows with the real wood. Promolink offers free consultation, measurement and installation, with warranty and after-sales care, so the measuring visit is a good time to go through your rooms one by one and decide where wood goes and where pleated or outdoor blinds work better. Frequently asked questions

Do timber blinds warp in Malaysian humidity?

They can, if they sit in damp air. Wood takes up moisture from humid air and swells, and the USDA Wood Handbook says this swelling and shrinking can cause warping, checking and splitting. In an air-conditioned bedroom, living room or study the air is usually drier while the air conditioner runs, and timber blinds suit those rooms.

Can I put timber blinds in a bathroom?

It is best not to. Shower steam and condensation keep wood damp, and the USDA Wood Handbook says the swelling and shrinking that moisture causes can warp, check and split wood. Promolink offers pleated blinds in moisture-resistant materials for a bathroom.

What indoor humidity is best for timber blinds?

Aim for below 60 percent. That is the US EPA's guideline for keeping mould away, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, and it lists air conditioners and dehumidifiers as ways to get there. The USDA Wood Handbook's table shows wood at 26.7 °C settles near 10.8% moisture at 60% humidity, against 20.2% at 90%.

Do timber blinds help keep a room cool?

Promolink says they help: the thick wooden slats of its timber blinds act as effective insulation from the outside heat all year round, and its timber blinds page calls them a classic choice for adding privacy and keeping sunlight at bay. Close them before the afternoon sun reaches the window.

Are outdoor wooden blinds the same as indoor timber blinds?

No. Indoor timber blinds hang inside the window. Promolink's outdoor wooden blinds, in wood and bamboo, are made for balconies, patios and gazebos, and Promolink says they come with teak oil protection, are weather and fungus resistant, and last up to 10 years.
